- Abstract
The importance of Spanish Transatlantic Company (CTE) in the introduction of maritime radio in early 20th-century Spain was studied in a previous article in this journal [Cruz & Piniella, 2014, pp. 13-43]. In this paper, we focus in the first telegraphists embarked in Spanish merchant ships, in order to trace the origin of maritime radio officers in Spain. We first study how the arrival of the first "marconists" to CTE steamships and the first communications on the vessel Alfonso XII contributed to setting up the first coastal radiotelegraph stations and helped in maritime casualties. Shortly thereafter, the National Wireless Telegraphy Company (CNTSH) decided to train its own operators, as the Spanish government was reluctant to embark foreign operators to address the lack of qualified technical personnel. As a result, Marconi Practical School was opened by mid-1912 in Madrid. One year later, the General School of Telegraphy was founded as first School of Telecommunications Engineering, awarding the official degree for radio officers.
