- Abstract
The article presents information on end-stage renal diseases. There are currently more than 400,000 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States, and more than one million patients worldwide. The topics reviewed in this supplement to "Kidney International" emphasize the role of hyperphosphatemia in the increased morbidity and mortality of patients with ESRD. Linda Szczech and Ira Lazar start the series with a review of the burden of Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the United States. Quinibi emphasizes that, when left untreated, hyperphosphatemia plays a major role in the pathogenesis of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), soft tissue and cardiovascular calcification, and increased risk of death, mainly from cardiovascular disease.
