- Authors
Abente-Brun, Diego
- Abstract
The article discusses the April 2008 presidential election in Paraguay, where a former Catholic bishop, Fernando Lugo, defeated the candidate from Paraguay's Colorado party, Blanca Ovelar de Duarte. Presidents of Paraguay had belonged to the Colorado party for 61 years prior to 2008, the article states. Other topics include the fall of longtime hegemonic parties in other countries including Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) after 70 years of rule and the transformation of a hegemonic-party regime into a fully competitive party.
