- Title
Jewish Censorship of Menasseh ben Israel's Piedra Gloriosa: A New Document from the Archives.
- Authors
Nadler, Steven; Tiribás, Victor
- Abstract
The article probes the Jewish censorship of the book "Piedra gloriosa" by Menasseh ben Israel, one of the rabbis serving the Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam's Talmud Torah Congregation in late 1654 or early 1655. A discovery in the Portuguese-Israelitic archives in Amsterdam, Netherlands reveals that the book was censored by the ma'amad or board of lay governors of Menasseh's own community. "Piedra gloriosa" was framed as a commentary on the Book of Daniel and contains Menasseh's messianist views.
