- Abstract
An essay is presented that discusses the origins of the use of the epitaph "charitable like Abigail" on Jewish tombstones in Germany. Topics include the portrayal of the biblical figure Abigail in the rabbinic tradition, the economic and charitable roles of women in medieval and early modern Germany, and the use of Abigail as a role model for Jewish women. Differences between Christian and Jewish references to Abigail are noted.
