- Abstract
The French-language daily newspaper Le Devoir was founded in Montréal in 1910 as an independent, nationalist and catholic newspaper, and it has played a major part in the development of Québec's society. Many see it as the newspaper of a French Canadian and, later, Québécois social and economic elite. In this article, we analyze the circulation data of Le Devoir and of its main competitors as well as some of its characteristics. We also take a look at its geographic distribution and at survey results pertaining to its readers and other French-Canadian elite. We conclude that Le Devoir holds a relatively constant share of the major French-language newspaper market in Montréal but that its circulation outside of Québec has strongly diminished over time. While the Québécois elite feature strongly in its readership, other social classes are also represented.
