The article focuses on the tribal style bellydancers in southwest Missouri. Such style is allegedly an attempt to create and open a space that welcomes and celebrates feminine global diversity and introduces within the mainstream culture a space for alternative and idealized identities. The history of the emergence of critical dance studies in the U.S. is offered. Also noted are the issue of dressing up, the social description of dance studios, and adoption of a kind of identity politics.
