- Abstract
This article discusses a classroom experiment that examined the effects of Inter-ethnolinguistic Peer Tutoring (lEPT) on the social interaction and English language proficiency of Spanish-speaking children. The three measures of English language proficiency on which subjects were tested include the PPVT, the LAS and the CCCT. The observation was focused on the determination of the extent to which they interacted with fluent English speakers. Then their overall English proficiency score and interaction score were matched. A trend analysis, correlations, and t tests showed that the IEPT treatment was successful in enhancing verbal interaction in English. Partial correlation analysis demonstrated that there was no relationship between verbal interaction and growth in proficiency. The results of this experiment prove that methods of teaching ESL have an impact on the English language acquisition of young minority children.
