- Abstract
Dermoscopy of hair and scalp diseases, also called trichoscopy, is a method of evaluation of any hairy area of the body surface. The handheld dermoscope with 10-fold magnification and videodermoscope with 20 to 70-fold magnification are the usual tools for this technique. Trichoscopy allows to distinguish characteristic features in hair and scalp diseases such as alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, cicatricial alopecias including discoid lupus erythematosus, lichen planopilaris and frontal fibrosing alopecia as well as hair shaft abnormalities like trichorrhexis invaginata, trichorrhexis nodosa, monilethrix, wooly hair, pili annulati and pili torti, and also the group of infectious and other inflammatory diseases affecting this part of the body.
