- Abstract
A literary criticism of the works of Najib Mahfouz, including the novels "Zuqaq al-Midaqq" (Midaq Alley), "Bidaya wa Nihaya" (A Beginning and an End), and "al-Shahhadh" (The Beggar), is presented. The author compares Mahfouz's interpretations of realism to the theories of German poet Bertolt Brecht and Hungarian philosopher György Lukáks. Topics discussed include readers' identification with characters, social justice, and narrative perspective.
