- Abstract
The article discusses the use of the sixth-grade-level book series "Sweet Valley High" in teaching English as a second language to 34-year-old Korean Karen, who has been living in the U.S. for five years with little interaction with native speakers of English. In one year, Karen read 25 "Sweet Valley Kids" volumes, 21 "Sweet Valley Twins" books and more than 20 novels from the "Sweet Valley High" series. Later, she was able to read about 40 copies of the "National Enquirer," four Harlequin Romances and eight novels by Danielle Steel and Sydney Sheldon.
