- Abstract
"The Charisma of World Revolution: Revolutionary Internationalism in Early Soviet Society, 1917–1927" by Gleb Albert explores the widespread belief among Bolshevik leaders and politically engaged Soviet people in the early years of the regime that the Bolshevik Revolution would inspire and assist foreign workers in overthrowing bourgeois regimes in their own countries. The book examines the engagement of activists with internationalism from the October Revolution in 1917 to its marginalization in the late 1920s. It also discusses the reasons for the decline of internationalism under Stalin, including the abandonment of the idea of a world revolution and the failure to institutionalize internationalist practices. The book provides extensive archival research and a comprehensive bibliography, making it a valuable resource for understanding the early years of Soviet rule. However, it is noted that the book is unnecessarily long and could benefit from more concise editing.
