- Abstract
The article discusses a study that aims to understand how and to what extent digital mass media are emancipatory with a focus on social media. It cites the adoption of a case study approach which can be used for developing and testing theory and explores activities by the actors most visible in the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) discourse. It suggests that some inevitable evils accompany the societal benefits of social media and that mass media is having a detrimental effect on public discourse.
