- Abstract
An essay is presented on the legitimacy and autonomy of states in relation to power and political debates as of 2014, focusing on Corey Brettschneider's book "When the State Speaks, What Should It Say?: How Democracies Can Protect Expression and Promote Equality." A state's duty of political partisanship is addressed, along with the social aspects of freedom. A state's reported obligation to respond to hateful speech is examined, along with the U.S. Supreme Court and democratic persuasion.
