- Title
The introduction of athletic nudity: Thucydides, Plato, and the vases.
- Authors
McDonnell, Myles
- Abstract
The article presents an overview of athletic nudity in Greece. Its origin may be attributed to Olympic victor Orsippos of Megara, Akanthos of Sparta, and to an unknown Athenian athlete during the seventh to eight centuries. However, Thucydides and Plato attested that the practice of complete nudity and the end of the zoma trend began before their era. One of the issues concerning athletic nudity is its approval and disapproval in the context of the Orsippos-Akanthos tradition. The principles of Plato and Thucydides on athletic nudity on vases are discussed.
