- Abstract
Antithrombotics use is especially challenging in contexts with a high risk of bleeding, such as surgery or some diagnostic procedures. Depending on the patient’s thromboembolic risk and bleeding risk, antithrombotic therapy is often, but not always, discontinued around surgery. The decision to stop medication is made individually. The moment of interruption as well as the moment of reinstitution of therapy are decided according to the incriminated drug and the indication for which it is used, the physiopathological characteristics of the patient, the type of surgical intervention and the way it is performed, scheduled or during emergency. Sometimes, in the perioperative period, injectable antithrombotic therapy (bridge therapy) is needed between periods of oral antithrombotics’ use
