- Abstract
Brachypterous milkweed bugs () were found in laboratory cultures of bugs collected on the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Laboratory crosses revealed that brachyptery was caused by a single recessive Mendelian unit but variation in brachypterous individuals revealed the presence of modifiers. A subsequent field trip to Guadeloupe revealed no brachypterous milkweed bugs or heterozy-gotes for this trait. The fact that brachyptery can be produced by a single Mendelian unit is of potential significance to the evolution of wing polymorphism.
