The article presents several studies on the discovery of mitochondria, an orgenelle containing enzymes responsible for producing energy. The 1996 discovery that the protein cytochrome c acted to trigger apoptosis forced people to look at mitochondria. The biggest sign of that explosion has been the arrival of drugs that target pro-survival BCL-2 family members.
