- Abstract
The paper discusses the complementation patterns of visual perception verbs in standard Macedonian. The focus is on the distribution of three complement patterns of these verbs: with kako, deka and da. The clausal complementation patterns of perception verbs in standard languages generally manifest a syntactic regularity based on the semantic distinction between ‘immediate perception' vs. ‘mental perception' (Dick & Hengeveld 1991), also known as direct and indirect perception. To establish the current functional distribution of the complementation patterns of the above verbs in Macedonian the authors conduct a corpus-based analysis using examples from the standard language. The analysis looks into structural and semantic factors that might influence the choice of complement patterns such as tense, aspect, possibility for raising and factivity. In Macedonian, the kako-pattern is used for direct perception, while the indirect perception employs the deka-pattern. The da-pattern encroaches into the domain of both direct and indirect perception usually under negation, but for coding direct perception da- complements predominantly occur in negated raised constructions or pragmatically marked contexts.
