- Abstract
This article focuses on the often overlooked group of people, usually men, who are noncustodial parents. The authors discuss 10 common dilemmas of parents in this position and delineate what can be done by individual and family counselors to enhance the ability of these parents to maintain parenting relationships with their children. <BR> Thus, the purpose of this article is to focus on the common dilemmas encountered by noncustodial parents and to provide suggestions and interventions to enhance their ability to maintain parenting relationships with their children. Because of most noncustodial parents are men, they receive particular attention in this article. The material presented reflects our experiences and observations in working with more than 250 noncustodial parents in clinical, legal, and educational contexts over the past 10 years. As marital and family counselors, we became increasingly sensitive to differences in adjustment between custodial and noncustodial parents. Our practice in marital, family, and divorce counseling also resulted in increased involvement in divorce mediation and consultation with couples, attorneys, and custody decisions in the legal process. Concomitantly, we expanded our academic interests and expertise to include courses, topical seminars, and workshops taught for counseling professionals and divorced parents.
