- Abstract
The archives of Russian composers and musicians outside Russia are an important part of the history of Russian music, but remain little studied by Western historians. As these archives become better known, Russian scholars can use them to further the story of Russian music in the modern era. The author looks at composers who can contribute to a better understanding of twentieth century Russian music, including works by V. Nelidov, who was active in Yugoslavia; F. Gartman, active in Paris, and Nikolay Tcherepnin, active in America. Research into their activities and their connections with Russia answers many fundamental questions about the existence of Russian music outside Russia and the way in which these composers preserved a national identity and self-identity.
