- Abstract
Most family businesses are known for inefficiency in employing professional human resource practices due to limited capabilities and low levels of specialization. Improper personnel management could be one of the main reasons for a family business failure, as performance is highly dependent on people. Therefore, the need for change and development in family business human resource practices is inevitable to enhance performance and sustain competitiveness. The study was conducted at an expanding family business in the Middle East, which was challenged with human resource planning within the overlapping dimensions of family, business, and ownership systems. The adapted methodology is a specific participative form of action research; it provides systematic guidance for progressive development and changes, referred to as "intervention research." Socioeconomic innovative methods were applied to change owners-as-CEOs practices and to develop proper human resources practices through synchronized actions. The results revealed the capability of the socioeconomic intervention to change the owners-as-CEOs' relationship with managers and the development of human resource practices, hence stimulating human potentials that enhanced the social and economic performance of the family business.
