- Abstract
Vasubandhu (ca. 400–480 CE) in his Pratītyasamutpāda-vyākhyā commentary on the *Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra devoted large part of the first chapter to the discussion of the socalled general formula of the pratītyasamutpāda (“dependent origination”), which consists of two statements in their “positive” and “negative” formulations (asmin satīdaṃ bhavati, asyotpādād idam utpadyate, etc.). These formulas reflect the notion of “special conditionality”—idaṃpratyayatā, i.e. “being conditioned by that”. In his considerations Vasubandhu quoted some important sūtra texts—Markaṭa-sūtra of the Nidāna Saṃyukta, *(Astitva-)ādiviśeṣa-vibhaṅga-nāma-dharma-paryāya (preserved only in two Chinese translations), Sahetusapratyayasanidāna-dharmaparyāya as well as passages from the Yogācāra treatise, the Yogācārabhūmi. An annotated translation of the ādi or “beginning” part of the first chapter of Vasubandhu’s Pratītyasamutpāda-vyākhyā translated from the Tibetan and Sanskrit is offered here.
