A survey of leatherjacket populations .(larvae of Tipula paludosa Meig.) in south-west England was made in 1963–74 using 2½ in. (6.3 cm) core turf samples and a Bristol washing apparatus to extract the leatherjackets. In a preliminary trial, population estimates using core samples of this size were similar to those using 4 in. (10.2 cm) cores.
