- Abstract
Leprosy is an important infectious contagious disease, mainly because of its high incapacitating power. If diagnosed and treated in a timely manner, the patient may evolve with different types and degrees of physical disability. The objective of the study was to analyse the factors associated with physical disability in new cases of leprosy reported in the Paço do Lumiar-MA, in the period 2006-2015. We analyzed 189 cases registered in the bank of the System of Information of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN). Statistical analysis was not performed R 3.3.1. In the bivariate analysis, it was observed statistically significant between schooling (p = 0.024) and operational classification (p = 0.026) with physical incapacity in diagnosis. The multiple logistic regression model shows that the individual's risk of being physically incapacitated at diagnosis is related to an age group of 15 years or older (OR: 4.84, 95% IC: 1.26-25.62), race / color white (OR: 3.08, 95% IC: 1.36-7.32) and black (OR: 2.87, 95% IC: 1.04-8.01), illiterate (OR: 7.39, 95% IC: (OR: 4.76; 95% IC: 1.28- 19.59) and multibacillary operational classification (OR: 4.38; 95% IC: 2.02-10.08) are more likely to present some degree of physical disability at diagnosis. The results contribute to give an idea of the projects of the managers and formulators of health policies for innovation and reorganization of health systems in dealing with this problem.
