- Abstract
To reveal the mechanisms of occurrence of rock bursts, failure characteristics of coal-rock combined bodies (CRCBs) were studied by using a high-accuracy automatic testing machine (ATM) with a controllable loading rate and an acoustic emission (AE) experimental system for detection and location of stratal instability in the laboratory. The test results demonstrate that the higher the uniaxial compressive strength of the CRCB samples, the more intensive the AE signals. The AE ring-down counts and energy rates of the samples remained quasi-stable in the compaction and elastic stages, while they rose twice in the plastic stage. Moreover, the AE ring-down count and energy rate of the samples in the post-failure stage begin to decrease. AE signals are sensitive to changes in load, so the AE system can be used to detect fracture development and propagation in CRCB samples. The more prone to a rock burst the samples, the greater the rate of release of AE energy. The larger the height ratio of roof to coal in the CRCB samples, the more intensive the AE signals and the greater the risk of a rock burst.
