- Abstract
The text discusses the prevalence and burden of neurocysticercosis (NCC) in different regions of the world. It highlights that NCC is a major cause of epilepsy and disability in poorer countries where pigs ingest human feces. In Asia, particularly in India and China, there are high burdens of NCC, with millions of cases estimated. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there is evidence of highly endemic transmission and significant symptomatic disease. In North America, reports of NCC have been increasing, mostly among Hispanic immigrants. The text emphasizes the need for resources to define high prevalence regions, prevent infection, and treat epilepsy and other complications associated with NCC.
