- Abstract
(1) Leaching of fertilizers into streams was studied in several forested catchments. In one case, Braes of Angus Forest, fertilized catchments were compared with unfertilized catchments: in the other case, Loch Ard Forest, leaching was compared before and after fertilization. (2) Phosphorus continued to be lost to streams in Loch Ard Forest three and a half years after the initial fertilization, whereas losses of nitrogen and potassium returned to normal after 3 and 2 years respectively. (3) Phosphorus losses amounted to 15% of the amount applied, averaging 2kg ha[sup-1] yr[sub-1] Nitrogen losses amounted to 4% of the amount applied in a partially treated catchments. Potassium losses amounted to 205 of the amount applied. 94) Nitrogen run-off, in the first year, from two adjacent fertilized watersheds in Braes of Angus Forest amounted to 95 of the total applied, of which 63% was in the form of nitrate-nitrogen.
