- Abstract
The article discusses Indians' use of Christianity and Christian terminology in pursuit of economic and political goals in 17th-century Plimouth Colony and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. According to the author, Indians were motivated by both material and spiritual concerns to express adherence to Christianity or use religious language in their interactions with English officials, a technique which allowed them some autonomy. Particular focus is given to petitions written by Indian sachems.
