Examines the controversy over regulated investment companies in general and mutual funds in the United States. Reference to a study made by the Securities and Exchange Commission; Growth in the assets of mutual funds; Consideration of the accusations of abuse, self-dealing, and conflicts of interest in the U.S. securities market; Examination of face-amount certificate companies, unit investment trusts, and management companies; Suggestion that the structural characteristics of the mutual fund industry weaken the bargaining position of funds in the establishment of advisory fee rates.
