- Abstract
The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management and electricity supply are concerns present in Brazil. At this juncture, the waste to energy plants (WTE) emerge as an alternative investment that could bring benefits to both the management of MSW, for the mitigation of environmental impacts, as for the Brazilian electricity sector. This work has the objective of analyzing in a comparative way future scenarios in Northeast's MSW management considering investments in WTE plants. For this purpose, the impacts on the occupation of space for MSW management, the emissions of methane and carbonic gases, and the generation of energy in the region were projected through a quantitative method of modeling over a period of 20 years. The results highlight the potential benefits of WTE plants through the considerable increase in power generation and notable reduction on greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and on the space occupancy.
