- Abstract
The complex nature of construction projects often becomes a compulsion of generating change orders. However, the critical role of project complexity between change orders and project performance seems understudied in the existing literature. This research aims to identify the main factors causing change orders and their potential effects on project performance and to determine the mediating effect of project complexity on the relationship between change orders and project performance in the context of educational building projects in the KPK province, Pakistan. Extensive data of 25 completed educational building projects in KPK, Pakistan was collected through a questionnaire survey from the construction professionals. In order to analyze these relationships, structural equation modeling technique was used which is an advanced and more suitable technique to analyze the cause and effect relationship among the latent variables. Results indicate that change orders negatively affect project performance and lead the educational building projects towards cost overrun, time overrun, client dissatisfaction, a dispute among parties and contractor's financial difficulties. However, Project complexity positively mediates the relationship between change orders and project performance in KPK educational building projects.
