A 3-month-old boy presented with acute onset refractory seizures manifesting as blank staring and arrest of motor activity. His parents likened his hair to that of teddy bear fur! Subsequent investigations included an electroencephalogram, which confirmed focal seizures; a magnetic resonance imaging brain scan showed bitemporal encephalomalacia and elevated serum and cerebrospinal fluid lactate.
