- Abstract
This article provides an overview of the European Baccalaureate (EB) and the European Schools, which are intergovernmental schools primarily attended by children of EU officials and diplomats. The EB is a unique college preparatory program that has been in place since 1959 but is not widely recognized by non-European Union admissions professionals. The article explores the origins, characteristics, legal framework, and governance of the EB and the European Schools. It emphasizes the importance of multilingualism and multiculturalism in the educational approach of the European Schools. The EB curriculum offers a diverse range of subjects to prepare students for university education, and its academic standards and assessment methodology should be taken into consideration when evaluating applicants. The EB is recognized as equivalent to national diplomas in EU member states, and reports and evaluations have shown that EB graduates excel in higher education, even those with lower grades. The European Schools system has rigorous standards and high academic achievements, outperforming schools in the EU, OECD, and host countries in reading, mathematics, and science, according to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). These findings highlight the quality of education offered by the European Schools system.
