- Title
In the Wake of Disaster: The Lake Carriers' Association, Welfare Capitalism and Lake Erie's Black Friday Storm of 1916.
- Authors
Daley, Matthew Lawrence
- Abstract
The article uses two October 1916 Lake Erie shipwrecks to examine the labour management program of the trade group the Lake Carriers' Association (LCA). The LCA's internal records reveal that behind the facade of benevolent paternalism lay a harsh and bureaucratically sophisticated system of control. This demonstrated both the attitudes of owners towards seamen and the labour policies they deemed necessary in the corporatized environment of the Great Lakes bulk transport network. The essay describes the policies of the LCA and the actions of officials to manage the disaster's results and the effects on families in an inversion of the traditional shipwreck narrative.
