- Title
FENELON'S REJECTION OF AFFECTATION OF FINE WIT IN SERMONS.
- Authors
Morrison, Matthew C.
- Abstract
This article discusses the renouncement of the preacher's affectation of wit in religious discourse by Francois de Salignac de La Mothe-Fenelon in his publication "Dialogues on Eloquence." Arguments forwarded in the "Dialogues on Eloquence" brought the mainstream of rhetoric back to its simple and familial style. Despite completely repudiating pleasure in rhetoric, Fenelon discussed pleasure as a way station on the road to ultimate persuasion.
