- Title
"Embodying Facts": Anxiety about Fiction in The Christian Lady's Magazine and Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's Social-Problem Novels.
- Authors
Janssen, Joanne Nystrom
- Abstract
The article presents literary criticism of the books "Helen Fleetwood" and "The Wrongs of Women" by Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna. Particular focus is given to the role of truth in the novels. It is suggested that Tonna's fiction can be understood in the context of her editorship of the periodical "The Christian Lady's Magazine" and 19th-century Evangelical concerns about the moral effects of reading. According to the author, Tonna's didactic style was an innovative response to such concerns.
