- Title
Bacterial Colonization of Implantable Cardiovascular Electronic Devices.
- Abstract
The article presents a study on infection of electronic cardiovascular implantable devices. Over a 14-month period, 121 devices were taken, with 53 implantable cardioverter/defibrillators (ICDs) and 68 pacemakers. Swab cultures were incubated for two days or five days while sonicate cultures were incubated for seven days. Sonication fluid was culture positive for 44, such as 56% of ICDs and 25% of pacemakers, while conventional swab cultures were positive in 27% of the 115 devices taken for reasons other than believed infection.
