- Abstract
This article discusses the iconography of Vytautas Mačernis in the diaspora and raises the issue of how his life and work were presented at different times in the periodicals, reviews, almanacs, and anthologies published in the emigration. These publications were reflectively supplemented by ego documents (letters from and recollections by friends). The creative output of V. Mačernis was published very actively, but mostly at the initiative of his closest friends, usually members of the žemininkai group (Kazys Bradūnas, Alfonsas Nyka-Niliūnas, Henrikas Nagys, Julius Kaupas, Paulius Jurkus). They published V. Mačernis? work in periodicals of which they themselves were the editors or to which they contributed. These included "Aidai", "Literatūros lankai", "Draugas", "Ateitis", and "Metmenys". V. Mačernis? poems were published in the émigré press associated with the ateitininkai, who also organized appropriate commemorations and poetry readings. The first two decades after V. Mačernis? death saw efforts in the diaspora to actively work at creating the Poet's legend. But eventually there was a movement away from a romanticized, mythological image of the Poet towards academic studies of his creations and translations of it, thereby presenting V. Mačernis to an English-speaking audience as well.
