- Abstract
The article describes a robot nicknamed Phred that was developed to fight the ongoing problem of drug medication errors. Phred checks medications using bar codes at the Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, Florida. Phred will hold a three-to four-day supply of 650 bar-coded drugs, packaged in individual doses, which are stored on separate rods. Pharmacists enter prescription orders into the hospital's computer database as Phred checks for drug interactions, allergies, and duplications before pulling the correct drug from the rod and dropping it into an envelope marked with a patient's name and bar code. Physicians will use handheld computers to send drug orders directly to the robot.
