- Authors
Eke, P.I.
- Abstract
The article assesses the use of social media in public health surveillance and research. It states that the article "Public Health Surveillance of Dental Pain via Twitter" by Heaivilin and others talks about the use of publicly available information from the microblog Twitter for use in dental surveillance and research and admits that microblogs do possess some attributes useful for public health surveillance. It comments that the problem with microblogs is that the information is not standardized or geared toward the collection of reliable and valid data from a strictly defined target population over time. It mentions that microblogs are being used successfully in the distribution of health information by organizations such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
