- Abstract
The control of the melting temperature in polymer forming process is essential to ensure the quality of the final products. The current article reports a study conducted to develop an experimental device equipped with one intrusive thermal instrument. The sensor placed within the flow allows for the measurement of the temperature profiles. At the same time, the modeling of the temperature measurement cell (TMC) is conducted to determine its capability to characterize the thermal and rheological behavior of polymer flow. A sensitivity analysis is performed to quantify the uncertainty of measurement because of the presence of the intrusive instrumentation. The experimental device is mounted on an extruder. Tests are conducted on elastomer flow. The temperature profiles recorded with the TMC at the outlet of a cylindrical straight runner are discussed. Experiments show the good sensitivity of the developed sensor. Indeed, at high flow rate, the viscous heating is clearly detected and a variation of several degrees on the temperature profile is measured. POLYM. ENG.
