- Abstract
A literary critique is offered discussing the 1941 novel "Frenchman's Creek," by Daphne du Maurier, analyzing its connections to themes and stock characters seen in traditional British folk ballads. The depiction of female sailors and cross-dressing women are particularly discussed. The existence and treatment of transgendered persons and transvestites within the novel and within the folk tradition are each examined in turn.
