- Authors
Phillips, Alastair
- Abstract
The article looks at the career of French actors Charles Boyer and Annabella to shed light on the nature of European actors' success or failure in the U.S. film industry during the 1930s. After the shooting of the film "Le Procés de Mary Dugan," Boyer received no more project and went back to France. He returned to U.S. for the film "Révolte dans la prison" and "The Magnificent Lie." His popularity in the U.S. was incomparable to his stellar image in France until his appearance in the film "Private Worlds." The factors that influenced the course of Boyer and Annabella's career are discussed, such as their accent, the way they are marketed and their acting skills.
