- Abstract
The article examines the representation of weddings in soap operas. According to television scholars, marriage in soap operas is not a point of narrative and ideological closure because soap operas interrogate the ritual as they celebrate it. Soap operas are said to construct sexual difference by fetishizing relationships rather than the body. The author asserts that the parameters of the television industry's discourse on soap operas as a media genre are defined by a contemporary set of relations among spectators, the apparatus of video-recorder technology and the discursive intertext among television soaps, fan magazines and production companies.
