- Abstract
The article focuses on the history and development of the video cassette recorder (VCR). In June 1972, Cartridge Television Inc. released its Cartrivision video cassette recorder, the first ever of its kind to be marketed in the U.S. Cartrivision's success was short lived owing to its inability to rewind cartridges without a visit to the retailer and the subsequent deterioration of its cartridges over time. Sony launched its Betamax VCR in 1975 and heralded the start of the video boom. Betamax was soon replaced by Video Home System (VHS) VCR marketed by RCA, which boasts of longer recording times as compared to Betamax' 1 hour format.
