The article focuses on the failure of the Akatsuki spacecraft of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to enter the orbit of Venus. The spacecraft lost its signal for more than one hour following its scheduled engine burn, but managed to call home to report the unsuccessful mission because of mechanical problems. The failure highlights some challenges facing the Japanese programme of research into the atmosphere of Venus.
