Abstract
The article cites a study which found that gene duplications may serve as the raw material for evolutionary changes in the physical attributes of fishes. Researchers have examined that the mutation responsible is in the gene fibrolast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1), which is required for embryonic development. They have also determined that mutations in the same gene cause the characteristics scale pattern seen in the domesticated mirror carp.
