- Abstract
This article analyses the Fiesta del Mar (Sea Festival), which takes place during the summer season on Quehui Island, located in the province of Chiloé in the South of Chile, based on thorough ethnographic work. Participants in the festival include current inhabitants of the island, people who migrated to urban centers of Chiloé in the 1990s due to the social changes that occurred because of the implementation of the neoliberal model in the region, and tourists. Through a Performance Theory approach, we propose that certain distinctive expressive manifestations of the Patronal festival that have historical roots in the area since the colonial period, and have antecedents in local indigenous cultures, allow for the emergence of new meanings and for the reconstruction of social ties among local actors.
