- Title
GIC STRATEGIES FOR THE '90S.
- Authors
HUGHES, BERNARD R.; TEMPLETON, WILLIAM D.
- Abstract
The article discusses strategies available to defined-benefit pension plans for investing in guaranteed investment contracts (GICs). GICs offer a multitude of benefits including a history of stable returns, the ability of participants to make withdrawals at book value, and safety of principal. In response to credit risk associated with GICs, though, several products such as synthetic GICs have appeared that address credit risk while retaining other GIC benefits. The author discusses synthetic GICs and outlines several investment strategies involving both traditional GICs and there more recent variants.
